Xann is reading...

A shocking yet intensely moving first-person account of one woman's experience of growing up in Japan's yakuza society. Born into the family of a wealthy yakuza boss, Shoko Tendo lives her early years in luxury. But labelled "the yakuza kid", she is the victim of bullying and discrimination from teachers and classmates at school, and of her father's violent rages at home. The family falls into debt and Tendo falls in with the wrong crowd. By the age of fifteen she is a gang member, by the age of eighteen a drug addict, and her young adulthood is marked by a series of abusive and violent relationships with men. After the death of her parents and her own attempt at suicide, Tendo turns her life around. A pivotal moment is the decision to get tattooed: an act of empowerment that helps her take control of her life. This is the universally appealing story of a young woman's successful struggle to escape from a life of ostracism and abuse, and a rare glimpse into Japan's closed yakuza world from an insider's viewpoint.

Merry X'mas

Just 5 mins ago, I was reading a past entry exactly 1 year ago on this Christmas day.

It all just seemed yesterday and I did mention 1 year ago that before I know it, another year will swift past me. This is so scarily true.

Orchard bustle

I swear I'm not going to do last minute x'mas shopping AGAIN!

I totally regret for not doing this earlier. Argh. Like me, everyone was doing frenzied shopping in Orchard. Nevertheless, it was good to be immersed in pretty lightings and decor at the heart of Orchard.

I caught a mini x'mas 'Chingay' parade near Centrepoint.

The x'mas tree @ Paragon won the best x'mas tree award I think.

And I hereby announce that my x'mas shopping ended pathetically futile. *whines*

shopping shopping!

I just realised I haven't really shop for a while... like seriously shop you know. Moreover, it's already 5 more days to x'mas and I'm not even done with like 20% shopping for gifts.

It's the season for giving... and spending as well. But of course this time I'm going to shop with rationality in order not to break the bank. Afterall, a little spending is somewhat boosting the economy right. Ha.

Yeah! I'm going shopping with Dan in town later and I hope I reap a basket of good and cheap buys!

A belated wedding post

This is a little late but I only just managed to upload the pictures taken on Shufen and Alex's wedding on 5 Dec. Some pictures stolen from Soo Yi's camera though!

This dear friend of mine finally got married off and now happily honeymooning in Japan. Hee.

The sister's entourage!

And of course the gorgeous bride...

They look so cute in this outfit!

3 hrs 18 mins

Yeah that's my personal timing for the long and toilsome journey of 21.2km! So proud of this medal! And yes, I must boast on the part that I only took 2 days to fully recover from all pain and aches... not one whole week as predicted. Hee hee.

Spot me spot me! :)

Salvaged...

I thought it was easy. But I was absolutely wrong.

Tears kept welling up at the thought of the decision.

I realised I couldn't let go.

I gave love a second chance.

We salvaged it.

I've got out of the longest and hardest struggle of my life. It feels relieved and terrible at the same time but I will need to come to terms with it.

A Paradox message by George Carlin

Evoynne forwarded me this email with a message by George Carlin.

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side..

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent..

Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

What to expect in December

  1. Being involved in Shufen's big day
  2. Running my first 21km in Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, followed by several days of anguish inflicted on the body... but still worth it.
  3. Busier days at work
  4. Tighter deadlines to meet
  5. Loss of focus... when it is not exactly in place
  6. Erratic mood
  7. Bigger hole in pocket
  8. Festivities but doubt I'll be in sync with it
  9. No sweet surprises, as usual
  10. Meet-ups with all my close girlfriends
  11. Indulgence in food and booze, and more workouts accompanied with it please
  12. More sensibilities in myself
  13. Set resolutions for 2009... including those in 2008 that haven't been met
  14. Somewhat a turning point in my life?

I hate and love this month. Bleah.
